When I’m not being active with my own exercise, one of my favourite things to do is chill out on the sofa and watch Netflix. Just because I’m being lazy, doesn’t mean I’m any less interested in sport. Among the favourites that everyone knows, there are some fabulous sporting shows, documentaries and movies on Netflix. They’ll allow you to see behind the curtain of what really goes on in a professional sports environment, immerse yourself in a sport you’re not too familiar with and maybe even motivate you to get off your own backside.
Here are 5 of the best sports’ titles:
Icarus begins with very keen amateur cyclist Bryan Fogel, attempting to dope his way to victory in one of the toughest amateur cycling races of the year without being caught by anti-doping measures. Icarus sets out initially by aiming to establish how easy it is to successfully dope without being caught, however after being recommended a Russian scientist who may be help with his efforts, Fogel ends up in the eye of the Russian-State-Doping storm as it unfolds. Icarus is exciting, informative and shocking. If my recommendation isn’t enough to make you watch, then perhaps the Oscar it won this year for “best documentary feature film” might sway you…

Juventus First Team
Unsurprisingly, this documentary follows Juventus’ first team through the current 2018 season. The documentary picks up on the back of 2 Champions League final defeats in the space of 3 years. With only 3 episodes currently out, it’s a really interesting watch, allowing you to get to know Italy’s Old Lady in a way that only people on the inside of the club usually would, as they strive to win this year’s Champions League. So far we’ve been treated to in depth chats with Higuain, Marchisio, Pjanic and football’s classiest man, Gigi Buffon (also world’s stiffest actor as seen in one of the episodes). As well as getting to know the players there’s team training, team analysis and highlights of games. If you love football, you’ll love this.

Last Chance U
Some of the best College athletes and potential NFL draft picks come out of East Mississippi, a place that no ones heard of, where no one actually wants to be. This College is a haven for those, that despite their undeniable talent, have been kicked out or dropped out of more prestigious Colleges. This is their “Last Chance” to get themselves back to the big time and drafted into the NFL. There’s 2 full seasons to binge watch with a shocking end to season 1. This documentary introduces some big personalities to the viewer and you’ll undoubtedly either love or hate Coach Buddy, who takes no shit.

If you think English fans and media are the only one’s who scrutinise their national team then you, my friend, are very wrong. Over the last 20 years, France have gone from World and European champions, to a team being called out by their own parliament after a very public team mutiny against manager Raymond Domenech at the 2010 World Cup. They are now a team back on the rise. “Les Bleus” follows the nations journey on the pitch across this period, but it is just as interesting to see how the state of affairs for the team trickles into society and changes the publics perception of their idols. “Sport is politics”.

The Short Game
This is a heart warming documentary following the golf world championship…for kids! Be under no illusion, these 7-year-olds would put you to shame. With their family members as caddies, seeing these kids take part in a sport they love at such a young age, will leave you inspired (and maybe make you feel a little useless that you can’t chip in from 40 yards when they can). There are certainly highs and lows but this documentary will leave you with a smile on your face. However, it’ll make you think about whether some parents might just be pushing their child a little too much.

Friday Night Lights
If I didn’t mention this then I’d be very disappointed in myself and so would my mate who introduced me to it. This fictional series follows Coach Taylor, his family and his High School American football team. The show features Kyle Chandler, a young Michael B. Jordan and Taylor Kitsch. This show is so binge-able it’s a joke and as the poster says, covers such a wide spectrum of emotions theres something here for everyone. The reason it’s only an honourable mention is that its been taken off of Netflix but I really recommend seeking it out.
Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can’t lose.
